Kisharon Langdon today publishes a practical language guide to help staff, volunteers, community partners and journalists use respectful, inclusive terminology when referring to autism, neurodiversity and people with learning disabilities.
At Kisharon Langdon, the language we use matters. When we talk about learning disabilities and autism, we’re committed to using terminology that is respectful, up-to-date and shaped by the people who matter most – the individuals we support and their families. Our approach follows current guidance from the NHS, the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training and the National Autistic Society.
These frameworks help us to stay aligned with best practice, but we also know that language is always evolving. That’s why we listen, learn and continually adapt. If someone we support prefers identity-first or person-first language, or has specific words they feel more comfortable with, we follow their lead.
Together, we can create a community where everyone feels understood, valued and respected.
